12:04 am - Hey humanity? This is why we can't have nice things.
From sactoboydave via Facebook:

Wal-Mart bans gay couple for NOT shoplifting

It gets so much worse than what the article title implies. While the gay couple were cuffed and held in squad cars, their special needs adopted children were taken to the Wal-Mart detention room and emotionally abused by security guards, such that they are still having nightmares. I suppose this is the sort of story that could be exaggerated and twisted, but still.

Aren't anti-gay folks supposed to be all about protecting the children? Abusing adults is one (horrible) thing, but this takes it to a whole other level.

If there are extraterrestrials monitoring the Earth, I can only assume that they have concluded that the dominant species is aggressive and irrational, not yet meeting their definition of sentience, and as such should not be contacted for several more millennia at minimum. If there are divine powers waiting to put magic back in the world to let us build a utopia bounded only by the limits of our creativity, now would not be the time to do it. I'm not saying that these wacky things are true, just that they sure as hell are not going to happen right now.

Our species is advancing, but sometimes we're about as compassionate as a bunch of chimpanzees.

10:11 pm - my not-so-hip podcast
Stayed up a little too late Sunday night, had coffee yesterday late morning, could not fall asleep until after 3AM. Wondered if people who take Ambien tried switching to decaf first.

Had a lot of meetings with students today and then had to lead a review session for their upcoming exam. I was really worried about being incoherent in front of ~150 students due to the sleep deprivation, but I had coffee in the afternoon and that got me through with flying colors. For my next trick I will attempt not to sleep through my 11AM concert tomorrow.

We do podcasting of lectures and review sessions in this class. It is weird to think that now there is a 2-hour audio recording of me doing genetics problems. I suppose that if podcasting and my desire to teach both persist, there will be many more recordings of me teaching. Still, I feel like when the professor posts it tomorrow I want to download it and burn it to a CD for historical purposes.
